Don't turn cat feud into war with neighbour
DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I have a neighbour who's lucky I'm letting her live. Her cat roams free and poops in my flower gardens. Yesterday, I hucked stones, OK rocks, at it and she caught me hitting it in the head. A lucky strike! She came running at me with her rake and I took off for the house. She had the nerve to say she was calling the cops on ME. Well, that did it. I phoned the animal authorities on her and now I'm getting a trap. Here, kitty kitty. -- Fed Up, Winnipeg
Dear Fed Up: Capturing your neighbour's cat will only escalate this feud into a war. There are less nasty ways to get rid of cat visitors than throwing rocks. Spraying with a hose or a spray gun would be infinitely better. A recent invention called a scarecrow sprinkler detects an intruder and sprays water in its direction. Also, check out an organic product called Shake-Away which carries the scents of urine from animals it fears, such the fox, coyote, and bobcat. Just shake the granules in the problem area -- won't hurt the plants a bit.
Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: My husband's cooking makes me gag. When I get home from work, he hands me a glass of chilled white wine, and shows me the night's kill. He likes to experiment with less popular meats such as goat, bison, sweetbreads and a variety of other organs. Yech! I feel guilty eating meats that name the animal out loud. I blame the cooking channel and the fact he doesn't have a full-time job. I just want a big, juicy steak. "After all the trouble I go to for you," he says, really acting hurt. If he wanted to please me, he'd cook things I like and get a job, right? -- Bacon Provider, Winnipeg
Dear Provider: It's not about the food. You're primed to dislike his big production dinners because you think he should be out looking for work instead. Talk about that honestly with him. Then tell him you will share the cooking and food-shopping, so he can go job-hunting. Suggest he approach restaurants where he can develop his cooking talents, and save up to enrol in a chef's program.
