Dad donates kidney to Modern Family actress

As Modern Family wraps filming for the summer, the show's Sarah Hyland has plans for her time off. But the 21-year-old won't be shooting her feature-film debut or taping a few extra episodes of Fashion Police (that we know of). Instead, she'll be recovering from a kidney transplant. As the actress revealed in a new Seventeen cover story, she underwent surgery last month.

Hyland, who plays Haley Dunphy on the Emmy-winning sitcom, was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia when she was nine, ABC reports.

"I would be in a lot of pain a lot of the time. If I didn't get, like, 12 hours of sleep, it felt, like, none at all," Hyland told ABC, talking about her life before the transplant. As anyone who's seen her on Modern Family, however, the illness didn't stop Hyland from performing. "You know, if you're sick, you still go to work," Hyland told ABC. "And in between takes, you sit down, or you lay your head down or something."

According to ABC, if Hyland hadn't had the surgery, she would have faced a life on dialysis -- and she has her dad to thank for her newfound health.

"You know that family is always going to be there for you -- no matter what," Hyland told Seventeen. "My dad gave me a freakin' kidney!"

Hyland says that since surgery, she's been touched by the support of family, friends and the Modern Family cast. ABC notes that her TV mom, Julie Bowen, has been helping her around the house, and her on-screen/off-screen boyfriend, Matt Prokop, has been with her throughout the ordeal. "He helps me with my medication and takes me to doctor appointments and all the stuff that I need to do to take care of myself," Hyland told Seventeen.

"I have a second chance at life," Hyland told the magazine. "Not a lot of people get that." Hyland's issue of Seventeen arrives on newsstands May 22.
