BY speaking to their children, they tell their story to the world.
The locally shot documentary Letters to Our Children: Stories of Refuge, follows the creation of an illustrated book that showcases heartfelt letters written by new immigrant mothers taking part in an inner-city English-language program.
Under the guidance of KidBridge educator Lorelle Perry, the 18 women -- most of whom are refugees who come from a dozen different countries and speak 10 different languages -- were encouraged to write letters to their children as a means of explaining what brought them to Winnipeg and what they hope life in their adopted home will bring for their offspring.
Letters to Our Children, which was directed by Leona Krahn, was filmed during a six-month period in 2012-13. The film, which first ran on MTS-TV's Stories From Home lineup, will be shown on CBC-TV's Absolutely Manitoba, Saturday at 7 p.m.
