Manitoba TV productions grab Gemini nominations

CANADA'S TV industry was more than complimentary to Less Than Kind on Tuesday, handing the locally produced comedy series eight nominations for the 2010 Gemini Awards.

The distinctly Winnipeg-based sitcom, which airs on HBO Canada, was one of several Manitoba productions to grab multiple nominations for this year's Geminis, which recognize the best in Canadian television.

Less Than Kind, which follows the misadventures of a dysfunctional North End family struggling to keep a small driving school on the road, earned nominations for best comedy series, best writing and direction in a comedy, and three nominations for best individual performance in a comedy, for co-stars Benjamin Arthur, Lisa Durupt and Wendel Meldrum.

The CBC mini-series Keep Your Head Up, Kid: The Don Cherry Story, which was filmed in and around Winnipeg last year, garnered seven Gemini nominations, including best writing and directing in a dramatic program, best actor in a leading role (Jared Keeso) and best actress in a supporting role (Sarah Manninen).

The Discovery Channel documentary series One Ocean, which was co-produced by Winnipeg-based Merit Motion Pictures, received four nominations, including best science/technology/nature/environment documentary and best cross-platform non-fiction project.

CBC News: Winnipeg received a pair of nominations, for best large-market local newscast and best breaking reportage.

The Frantic-Films-produced series Til Debt Do Us Part is nominated for best lifestyle/practical information series, and local curling legend Ray Turnbull is nominated for best sports analyst.

The 2010 Gemini Awards will be handed out in a series of ceremonies in Toronto this November. The CTV/CBS cop drama Flashpoint leads all programs, with 15 nominations, including best dramatic series. CTV's multi-platform coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics received 13 nominations, and four other programs -- Stargate Universe, Guns, Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures and The Summit -- each received nine nominations.
