More vampires. More paranormal powers and super-human heroics. A sort-of historical adventure about a young queen who hasn't yet lost her head.
And, of course, an expanded roster of young, gorgeous stars to bring all of the above to life in the youth-focused CW network's signature style.
That, and a limited prime-time lineup filled mostly with returning titles, is what the CW unveiled Thursday during the final day of the U.S. networks' annual upfront sales presentations in New York. The CBS/Warner-owned network, home of dramas aimed at the 18-to-34 demographic such as Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Arrow and Beauty and the Beast, rolled out a fall schedule that includes just three new titles and introduced three other shows that will arrive at mid-season.
The CW's prime-time schedule, which is limited to two hours nightly from Monday to Friday, will feature nine hour-long dramas and one reality/competition series (America's Next Top Model) this fall. Many of its shows are picked up by Canadian broadcasters and specialty cable networks.
Monday's lineup features two returning shows in new time slots -- Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast -- and Tuesday night pairs new entry The Originals -- a roots-exploring spinoff of The Vampire Diaries -- with long-running drama Supernatural.
On Wednesdays, the CW will air returning rookie hit Arrow alongside another new title, The Tomorrow People, which focuses on a teenage boy who starts hearing voices and "teleporting" in his sleep and soon discovers he's part of an advanced race with paranormal powers.
The Vampire Diaries returns on Thursday, acting as lead-in to new arrival Reign, which focuses on the royal misadventures of a young and highly fictionalized Mary, Queen of Scots.
Friday's schedule on the CW includes the return of the Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries and Season 20 of America's Next Top Model.
The CW has two other dramas on deck for mid-season launch -- Star-Crossed, which focuses on the friendship between a human teen and an alien refugee in a world in which the two species, after years of warfare, are struggling to coexist, and The 100, a post-apocalyptic adventure about a group of juvenile prisoners from international space stations who are sent back to Earth 100 years after a nuclear war to find out if the planet is once again habitable.
Also slated for mid-season is Famous in 12, an unscripted social-experiment series that follows the members of one very determined family as they move to Los Angeles and try to become as famous as the Kardashians within a year's time.
The returning spy-action drama Nikita is currently on the shelf and will resume sometime during the 2013-14 campaign.
Canada's commercial broadcasters will unveil their schedules early next month during this country's version of upfront ad-sales presentations.
