War of the Worlds

In this new documentary, PBS's American Experience looks back on one of the controversial Oct. 30, 1938 broadcast of Orson Welles' radio-play adaptation of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. Most listeners understood it was a scripted drama, but as many as a million confused Americans thought their country was actually being invaded by Martians. PBS, 8 p.m.

The Biggest Loser

Alison Sweeney hosts the show's first-ever auction as the contestants bid on gym equipment with "Biggest Loser" bucks in this new episode. With limited gym equipment to use, the players and their trainers will have to get creative. NBC, 7 p.m.

Trophy Wife

In the new episode Halloween, Kate tries to take control of the holiday after the costume Jackie made for Bert doesn't quite work out. Meanwhile, Pete takes a teenager hostage. ABC/CTV, 8:30 p.m.
