The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards

Sunday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., CBS and CTV

Neil Patrick Harris, who's shown himself to be a triple-threat talent in these awards-show gigs, returns as host of the annual celebration of TV's best. Among this year's top nominees are FX's American Horror Story, which is up for 17 awards, and HBO's Game of Thrones, which earned 16 nominations.

The Blacklist

Monday, Sept. 23, at 9 p.m., NBC and Global

James Spader returns to prime time in one of the new season's best rookie dramas. Spader, a master of creating offbeat characters, is cast as a former FBI agent who's gone rogue and is now on the agency's most-wanted list. Seemingly out of the blue, he turns himself in with a bizarre and obviously agenda-driven offer to help the feds track down terrorists.
