10 Winnipeg arts organizations share almost $1.7 million in federal funding
TEN Winnipeg arts organizations have received injections to their endowment funds, the federal government announced Monday.
A total of almost $1.7 million has gone into the endowments, based on the government providing 71 cents for every dollar donated by the private sector.
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet was by far the biggest recipient, with $1.3 million going into its endowment. The Manitoba Theatre Centre got about $234,000. The other eight companies, which received between $795 and $55,000 each, are Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers, Jazz Winnipeg, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, Sarasvati Productions, Shakespeare in the Ruins, the Winnipeg Folk Festival and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
The money was provided through the Endowment Incentives component of the Canada Cultural Investment Fund.
At Monday's announcement at the RWB building by MP Vic Toews on behalf of James Moore, minister of Canadian Heritage, the government also announced the 2010-11 funding for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and the School of Contemporary Dancers.
The RWB School gets $725,000 and the SCD $260,000.
That money comes through the Canada Arts Training Fund, which had its budget augmented by Canada's Economic Action Plan.
