Rainbow Stage artistic director at News Café

THE 2013 Rainbow Stage season will consist of Buddy, the Buddy Holly Story and Mary Poppins.

The summer theatre and new artistic director Ray Hogg had to wait until after Jan. 1 (when they gained the production rights) to unveil its 2013 playlist, which features two musicals never presented before by the 58-year-old company.

Buddy, a jukebox musical chronicling Holly’s rise to rock ’n’ roll stardom and sudden death in the late ’50s, will open the Rainbow season June 11. The tribute show features such hits as Peggy Sue, That’ll Be the Day, Rave On and True Love Ways. A touring production of Buddy visited Winnipeg for an eight-show run in 2003.

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins is set for an Aug. 9-29 run. The popular family show about the world’s most famous nanny boasts the musical classics Chim Chim Cher-ee, A Spoonful of Sugar and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. It is currently running on Broadway.

Tickets for Buddy are $59 while Mary Poppins are $35, $49.50 and $59.50 and can be purchased by calling 204-989-0888 or at www.rainbowstage.ca/tickets.
