Fringe shows forced to relocate

Venue shut down by city

Half a dozen Fringe shows are having to relocate after the city shut down their venue Thursday, the Fringe said.

Aqua Books, located on Princess Street, did not acquire the correct occupancy permit, said Teri Stevens, publicist for the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival. It was designated as venue 20.

Stevens said the city told them the venue was being shut down because they hadn’t acquired the correct permit. One performance was moved to the King’s Head venue Thursday night, while the other three shows scheduled were cancelled.

"Our concern is the performers, because we want to do everything we can for them," she said.

The six shows will be moved to another venue, Stevens said, which is yet to be confirmed, but will hopefully be worked out Friday morning.

"It’s unfortunate for the companies that are in there," she said. "We’re hoping for a positive outcome and it looks pretty promising right now."

Aqua Books was a BYOV (Bring Your Own Venue) at the Fringe festival. BYOV venues have to take care of their own permits.
