Gryphon Trio to perform at WAG exhibition
An acclaimed Canadian chamber ensemble will give two concerts at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in conjunction with an exhibition of massive landscape paintings inspired by music.
Toronto’s Gryphon Trio, with guest clarinetist James Campbell, will perform on May 10 and 11. The musical program is inspired by Stephen Hutchings: Landscapes for the End of Time, a show of eight monumental — almost life-size — paintings on view from May 10 to Aug. 5.
The exhibition takes its name from French composer Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. Messiaen wrote the piece while interned at a German prison camp in 1940. He and other prisoners first performed it for their fellow inmates in 1941.
"Although not directly inspired by the score, Hutchings’ paintings consider the relationship between the life span of an individual and the idea of eternity," the WAG said in a news release. On May 10 at 7 p.m., the Ottawa-based Hutchings will give a talk, followed by an 8 p.m. performance by the Gryphon Trio, both in the WAG’s Muriel Richardson Auditorium.
On May 11, both the 6:30 p.m. talk and 7:30 p.m. performance will take place surrounded by the paintings in the gallery itself.
"Quartet for the End of Time is one of the most moving chamber works ever written," Gryphon Trio cellist Roman Borys (no relation to WAG director Stephen Borys) said. "The music and paintings combine beautifully."
The ensemble will also perform Alexina Louie’s Echoes of Time, which was inspired by Messiaen’s work, and Valentin Silvestrov’s Fugitive Visions of Mozart.
The Juno Award-winning trio includes violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon and pianist Jamie Parker as well as Borys.
Admission to each talk/concert is $30 (WAG members $25) and includes admission to the exhibition. Tickets can be ordered at 786-6641, ext 235. or www.wag.ca.
