Hot Thespian Action nominated for national comedy award

  • Print

The local sketch-comedy troupe Hot Thespian Action has been nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award.

The Winnipeg-based quintet — Jane Testar, Shannon Guile, Jacqueline Loewen, Garth Merkeley and Ryan Miller — are in the running for the title of best sketch-comedy troupe. It’s HTA’s third nomination in the category, having also been in the field in 2011 and 2012.

"In comedy writing there’s something called the Rule of Three," troupe member Garth Merkeley said in a released statement. "Things are just always funnier in threes. So we figure that bodes well for our third nomination."

Hot Thespian Action has been performing locally and across Canada for nearly a decade, making annual appearances at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and contributing regularly to the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. The group wrote and performed a special called Pitching the Turkey for CBC Radio last Thanksgiving, and is actively pitching a TV-series project to several Canadian broadcasters.

The locally produced TV series Less Than Kind also received a nomination in the best TV show category.

The Canadian Comedy Awards will be handed out in Ottawa in September.
