Lumberjacks at the Ex make the hard stuff look easy
There's much more to being a lumberjack than knowing the catchy Monty Python song.
Much more. In fact, from what I can tell after my hour flailing away at their various skills, such as axe throwing, tree climbing, buck sawing and log rolling, there's some jumping and maybe even skipping but absolutely no pressing of wild flowers or putting on women's clothing and hanging around in bars.
Dave Weatherhead, the owner Timberworks Lumberjack Show, one of the first-time attractions at this year's edition of the Red River Exhibition, agreed to give the Free Press some lessons on lumberjacking.
Like most things that the professionals make look easy, these skills are hard. One of Weatherhead's assistants ran straight up one of the "trees" expending the same amount of effort one might use to go up the stairs to answer the phone.
And log rolling? Well, that's impossible.
