Google Tips: New Site to Help You Use Google Products

bit.ly/google_tips2013

EVEN if you don’t rely heavily on Google’s growing suite of consumer products, from its ubiquitous Gmail program to its popular photo-sharing service and its fledgling social network, Google+, the company’s new online tip website, offers up some handy insights into many of the 13 products that make up Google’s online presence.

Google Tips is elegantly designed and easy to follow, creating a simple way to get to know Google’s products. It covers Search, Gmail, Chrome, Android, YouTube, Maps, Docs, Drive, Play, Calendar, Keep, News and Google+, and it’s just in time for the busy tech-buying season. This will be a great resource for anyone getting a new Android tablet for the first time, switching from Apple’s online ecosphere to a Google phone or finally making the switch from that ancient Hotmail.com email account.

Boiler Room Apps

SINCE its launch in London in 2010, Boiler Room has become an important window into electronic music culture. Focusing on small, intimate performances that are streamed live to the world and later made available on-demand, Boiler Room has been one of the most important developments on the web.

While BR has cultivated a loyal fan base through its online streaming, the launch last week of apps for both Apple and Google devices will allow it to capture more market share, especially among mobilephone users (although some of the functionality of the apps could still use some polishing).

MP3 of the Week: The Lytics — Stay Calm

thelytics.bandcamp.com

SET to release their fourth video, On Top, on Dec. 19 at Union Sound Hall, the Lytics have teamed up with Procter Bros. Industries for an ambitious animated video. Crafting handmade versions of the group and painstakingly putting together the complex video, the Procter brothers have been busy this past year, turning out some of the most unique videos on the web.

If you still aren’t on the the Lytics’ throwback hip-hop bandwagon, check out this name-your-price download of their single, Stay Calm, or head to the video release party on Thursday.

Video of the Week: Detroit — Tracing Skylines

bit.ly/tracing_skylines

SHOT in the abandoned and dilapidated skeleton of the Packard Plant in Detroit, Tracing Skylines showcases the urban skiing talents of Karl Fostvedt, Khai Krepela and Max Morello. Against a backdrop of decay, the decline of the auto industry and a city struggling to survive, these three skiers show the possibilities of imagination that occur when you don’t let your surroundings dictate what you can and can’t do.
