Wave named magazine of the year

The diversity of Manitoba magazines was celebrated Thursday night at the Fort Garry Hotel, when the fourth annual Maggie Awards were doled out.

Organized by the Manitoba Magazine Publishing Association and hosted by CBC Radio One’s Terry MacLeod, the Maggies recognize publications ranging from literary periodicals and history journals to magazines dedicated to horses and the people who love them, and scuba diving.

Taking home the magazine of the year award (consumer category) was Wave, the health and wellness magazine published monthly by the Winnipeg Health Authority.

In the business-to-business/association category, Duck’s Unlimited Conservator was the winner, capping off a night of multiple wins that included best cover and best editorial package.

Other multiple winners in the consumer category were:

  • Kayak: Canada’s History for Kids, which was awarded best editorial package and best regular column or department;
  • Prairie Fire, which took home Maggies in the poetry and short fiction categories;
  • and the now-defunct Sandbox, which won best cover and most innovative marketing initiative.

Other Maggies were won by:

  • Canadian Dimension for best non-fiction feature;
  • SAY (Spirit of Aboriginal Youth) for most effective web/new media activity.

The People's Choice awards went to:

  • Wine magazine The Cellar Door in the consumer group;
  • Conservator in the business-to-business/association group.
