Winnipeg aboriginal artist Belmore wins Governor General's Award

A prominent aboriginal performance and installation artist who relocated to Winnipeg last summer is a winner of a 2013 Governor General’s Award in visual and media arts, it was announced today.
Rebecca Belmore, along with five other contemporary artists and a critic, were introduced at the Cinémathèque québécoise in Montreal and recognized for their distinguished career achievements. All will receive a $25,000 prize from the Canada Council and a special issue medallion produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. Next Tuesday they will be presented their awards by Governor General David Johnston at a ceremony at Rideau Hall.
"It’s good to be acknowledged by your peers," said Belmore, the 53-year-old Ojibwa who was the first aboriginal woman to represent Canada at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 2005.
Belmore, who created her reputation as an artistic provocateur elsewhere, says she’s happy to be counted as a Winnipeg award-winner.
"I’m yours," said a laughing Belmore, who moved here from Vancouver in August. "It’s nice to be in Winnipeg."
