David King play reprised as fundraising reading

A play that was first produced in Winnipeg in 1974 will be revived at 8 p.m. Monday as a staged reading at the Gas Station Arts Centre.

David King's Freeman of the Plains will be presented by an impressive lineup of local stage talent as a fundraiser for the Manitoba Association of Playwrights. Tickets are $15 and can be reserved at 942-8941 or mbplay@mymts.net

The historical/hysterical comedy was originally called Visions of Lowest Fort Garry when it was staged by Manitoba Theatre Workshop, which would become Prairie Theatre Exchange. King (Life Skills, Contents Under Pressure) not only renamed his script but expanded the story about what happened at the Red River in 1816 involving some real historical figures.

"Though it is clearly a comedy, it does what it can to honour their contribution to paving the way for a vibrant community on the banks of the Red and Assiniboine River," says King, a former Winnipegger.
