High-kicking Moulin Rouge propels RWB to surplus
THE high-kicking success of Moulin Rouge -- The Ballet propelled the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to smash attendance records and post a surplus last season.
The 70-year-old company ended the 2009-10 season with a surplus of about $323,000 on a budget of $11.7 million, it was announced at the annual general meeting Wednesday night.
The troupe performed for more than 123,000 people (compared to about 73,000 the previous season) in 25 home performances and 45 tour shows, making it one of the most successful seasons in company history.
Moulin Rouge, a new production choreographed by RWB's Jorden Morris, was performed for more than 56,000 people in Winnipeg, Brandon, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Kelowna, Vancouver, Victoria and Ottawa.
The Parisian ballet is scheduled to cancan into eight more cities in Ontario and Quebec in 2010-11, and to tour in the U.S. in 2012.
Another highlight of last season was a joint performance with the National Ballet of Canada as part of the Cultural Olympiad at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
Next month, the company embarks on its first overseas tour in seven years, with performances in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa, Israel as well as Amman, Jordan.
RWB's 71st season opens next week with the return of Dracula, Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 at the Centennial Concert Hall.
