Preview arts seasons at News Café brunches

IN addition to falling leaves, dropping temperatures and the start of another school year, fall is also that time of year when Winnipeg's arts community comes alive with the launch of new seasons of art, music, theatre and dance.

Join writers and critics from the Winnipeg Free Press as they preview the 2012-13 seasons for the city's most notable arts organizations in a series of brunch events at the Free Press News Café in the heart of the Exchange District.

The Brunch with the Arts series will give patrons a chance to meet a cavalcade of directors, dancers, musicians, singers and musicians from Prairie Theatre Exchange, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Opera Company.

Free Press Editor Paul Samyn said the brunch series will be an unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the people who make the art that is so much part of the fabric of Winnipeg. "At the Free Press, we often take for granted that we have access to all these creative people when we are working on our stories," Samyn said. "These events will give fans the chance to meet these giants of the artistic community, ask questions and gain an insight in what makes them tick."

The series starts on Sunday, Sept. 23, with PTE. The series continues with the following weekend with an unique double-header: the WSO (Saturday, Sept. 29) and the RMTC (Sunday Oct. 30). Other dates include the RWB (Sunday, Oct. 14) and the Manitoba Opera (Sunday, Oct. 28).

A full brunch will be served at 11 a.m.

Sunday, Sept. 23 - Prairie Theatre Exchange
Come celebrate the 40th anniversary of Winnipeg's PTE with some of the key artistic forces behind the theatre company. Featured at this brunch will be artistic director Robert Metcalfe, general manager Cherry Karpyshin and playwright Ellen Peterson.

Saturday, Sept. 29 - Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
One of the busiest WSO seasons ever kicks off with this season preview. Join WSO music director Alexander Mickelthwate and resident conductor Richard Lee for a wide-ranging discussion about the various WSO series -- from the ever popular Pops to the enduring Classics.

Sunday, Sept. 30 - Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre
RMTC artistic director Steven Schipper, recently awarded the Order of Canada, will lead a review of the 2012-13 seasons at the mainstage and Warehouse. Schipper will be joined by other artistic personalities from the company.

Sunday, Oct. 14 - Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet
In celebration of the RWB's "fairy tale season," please join artistic director Andre Lewis, principal dancer Vanessa Lawson, and Twyla Tharp and Broadway dancer John Seyla as they preview and explore one of the company's most ambitious seasons ever.

Sunday, Oct. 28 - Manitoba Opera
Winnipeg's own soprano Tracy Dahl will be joined by director Rob Herriot to discuss the MOC's production of Verdi's Rigoletto, which opens Nov. 24.
