LIANG Xing, who has been a guest artist with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet during the 2013-14 season, has been promoted to principal dancer, in a series of promotions announced late Thursday.
Xing, who performed as the Nutcracker Prince in Nutcracker and as Romeo in Romeo + Juliet this season, joined the RWB after a four-year stint with the National Ballet of China, where he was also a principal dancer. He has also won the Silver Prize at the Moscow International Ballet Competition in 2009 and Silver in the Shanghai International Ballet Competition in 2007.
Yayoi Ban, who will begin her ninth year with the RWB, was promoted to soloist from second soloist and dancers Sarah Davey and Tristan Dobrowney have moved up to second soloists from the corps de ballet.
Manami Tsubai and Yoshiko Kamikusa, who were RWB apprentices, have been added to the corps de ballet. The ballet also added three new apprentices, Jaimi Deleau, Amy Chieko Young and Tyler Carver.
The RWB begins its 2014-15 season, its 75th anniversary, with A Story of Truth and Reconciliation, which premières Oct. 1 at the Centennial Concert Hall.
