Stream of the Week: Big Fun Festival Playlist

bigfunfestival.com

SPREAD out over five days during the height of winter, for the past couple of years the Big Fun Festival has given Winnipeg music fans plenty of excuses to check out bands, DJs and singer/songwriters in some unique venues around downtown that aren't always used for shows.

With a heavy local flavour in the diverse lineup, the festival is also expanding its profile by co-promoting shows such as Metz on Thursday, Jan 23, Venetian Snares on Saturday, Jan. 25, and Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) and Jim Jarmusch at Union Sound Hall on Monday, Jan 27.

Some of the local artists performing at the festival include post-rock group Warsaw, hip-hop act SMRT and No List Records' Dead Ranch. Visit the festival's site for the full lineup and schedule. The festival's all-access pass will set you back $60 and get you into over a dozen shows by more than 30 performers in 11 venues. You can purchase tickets to individual shows and passes at Into the Music and Music Trader and online at ticketworkshop.com.

Video of the Week: Lee Ranaldo and the Dust -- Ambulancer

bit.ly/lee_ranaldo

LEE Ranaldo is probably best known for his work with seminal New York noise act Sonic Youth. During his time with the band, he also experimented as a solo act and more recently has recorded as Lee Ranaldo and the Dust, releasing an album last year on Matador Records called Last Night on Earth. The 57-year-old guitarist will perform solo Monday, Jan 27, at Union Sound Hall, with filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and Phil Kline also on the bill. Tickets are $15 at Music Trader, The Urban Bakery and ticketworkshop.com. This is Ranaldo's second solo appearance in Winnipeg: he performed as part of the Send + Receive festival in the 1990s.
