RANDALL KING Ñ MOVIES

A Hole lotta fun

Director Joe Dante's 3D thriller The Hole debuted in Toronto back in 2009 and has since, well, disappeared into a hole, apparently. But now comes the news that this kid-friendly thriller about a family who discover an otherworldly portal in their basement will be released stateside in September. Watch this space for word of a Canadian release.

MORLEY WALKER Ñ MAGAZINES

Being second is nothing to sneeze at

Anyone spending time with Random House Canada's new online magazine, Hazlitt, will be impressed by the content. RH, after all, has a stable of authors second to none in the country, and its international list ain't so bad, either. Their claim, however, to be the "first-ever original digital magazine initiated and curated by a Canadian trade book publisher," will raise eyebrows at The Winnipeg Review, started in January 2011 by this city's Great Plains Publications.

ANTHONY AUGUSTINE Ñ BOOKS

Christian Hosoi's autobiography

While filmmaker Stacy Peralta's upcoming documentary on the Bones Brigade takes a look back at Tony Hawk and his influential skateboard crew, what about the other superstar from the '80s, Christian Hosoi? At the height of his career, the stylish and free-spirited Hosoi was Hawk's biggest rival, living a rock-star lifestyle, piling up sponsorships, cash and fleeting fame. In his new book, Hosoi, the former icon looks back at his career, the drug addiction that landed him in prison and his triumphant comeback.

MELISSA MARTIN Ñ MUSIC

Barging in

The dog days of summer are taking a bite out of any night-time excitement, but there are yet some hot events this week. Our pick: the Manitoba Lotteries Barge Festival is going down at The Forks this weekend, so stretch out a blanket and chill out by the water to hear free concerts by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (Friday night) and Cape Breton icons the Barra McNeils on Sunday. More information is at TheForks.com.

KEVIN PROKOSH / THEATRE

Fringe wrap

The 2012 Edmonton Fringe Festival closed Sunday with indoor attendance of 112,006, up about 8,000 from a year earlier. In Winnipeg, the fringe festival indoor ticket total last month was 100,621, a jump of nearly 13,000. Edmonton hosted 215 shows, up from last year's 182, while Winnipeg featured 172 shows, as compared with 150 in 2011. Edmonton Journal reviewers gave five stars to only five shows, including Progressive Polygamists and Of Mice and Morro and Jasp. Loon won the festival's Critics' Choice Award.
