Cat Bounce

For some reason, cats control the Internet. Cat memes are everywhere, from pictures shared on Facebook by former actor George Takei to an endless list of Tumblr pages to websites like Cat Bounce -- cat-bounce.com -- that spring up overnight and have a massive following within a few days. The premise of this whimsical site is simple, yet it quickly becomes a highly addictive time-waster -- two things that usually guarantee a hit on the Internet.

David Cronenberg's creepy 1979 movie The Brood refracted the director's own relationship with his estranged wife during a nasty divorce. And Winnipeg-born writer/ex-Cinematheque programmer Kier-La Janisse , right, is the woman who knows how to link artistic efforts to personal experience, which she proves breathtakingly well in her new book, House of Psychotic Women. She'll launch the book Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at Cinematheque. Screening The Brood afterward is just a bonus.

Revenge is the best success

Nearly halfway through the second season of ABC's Revenge (Sunday at 8 p.m., also on Citytv), there's little remaining doubt that Canadian-born actor Emily VanCamp, right, is a legitimate TV star. The 26-year-old native of Port Perry, Ont. has basically grown up in prime time, starting with supporting roles on Everwood (2002-06) and Brothers & Sisters (2007-10), and with Revenge, she demonstrates every week that she's capable of carrying the weight of series stardom.

It's doubtful the Taliban are impressed

Penguin Canada has announced the May 2013 release of a new novel by Afghan-born American medic Khaled Hosseini. Titled And the Mountains Echoed, it is being billed as a multi-generational story about brothers and sisters "and the ways in which they love, wound, betray, honour and sacrifice for each other." Hosseini's previous novels, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, have sold an 38 million copies worldwide, according to Penguin.

Let the magic begin

Even if you're a mere muggle who doesn't know the difference between a Dementor and you-know-who, you probably already know there are only six more sleeps until the Winnipeg debut of Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience at Manitoba Theatre for Young People. Two wand-wielding former BBC children's hosts, Jeff Turner and Dan Clarkson, shrink all seven Harry Potter novels, as well as a real Quidditch match, into 70 minutes of stage mayhem which has earned raves around the globe.

Big fat success

Illinois-born author Jami Attenberg's fourth novel, The Middlesteins, is a scathing but often funny portrait of a dysfunctional Jewish Midwestern family whose 350-pound matriarch is committing slow suicide by food. Attenberg has an acute eye for the pain we cause those we love, but her descriptions of food are even sharper. It's probably not her intent, but you may find yourself craving a McRib by the end of the book.
