Like Father, like son
Irish actor Brendan Gleeson commands the screen as a beleaguered Catholic priest in John Michael McDonagh's excellent Calvary, now playing at the Towne theatre, but he's abetted by a stellar cast that includes his son, Domhnall Gleeson, a chip off the old acting block who has a chilling cameo as an incarcerated serial killer looking for forgiveness.

Former high-school hoops star takes shot at Biggest Loser title
Twenty years ago, her on-court determination earned her a Hustle Award and a high school basketball title. Now former St. John's High School star Jackie Pierson has her sights set on The Biggest Loser's most-weight-lost crown. Pierson, 36, a graduate of the University of Manitoba who now lives in southern California and works as a clinical care co-ordinator, is one of 20 contestants in the NBC series' upcoming 16th season. Her motivation for slimming down from her current weight of 291 pounds, according to her Biggest Loser bio, is "so she can be there for her two daughters, ages two and five" and also that "she hopes to take what she learns on the ranch back to her Native American community to inspire others to make healthy changes." The Biggest Loser's 16th season premières Sept. 11.
KEVIN PROKOSH / THEATRE
Queen of the sea
Who knew Jennifer Lyon's considerable acting range included an outstanding cacaelia? In the current Rainbow Stage musical spectacle Disney's The Little Mermaid, the ever-watchable Winnipeg performer brings great comic cheek to her role as Ursula, who from the waist up is a blond-haired human, with the tentacles of a black octopus below. The venomous relish she exhibited while munching on (what else?) Goldfish crackers in Ursula's lair horrified pint-sized spectators while cracking up their parents.
