Theatre Projects announces lineup for 23rd season

BASHIR Lazhar, the Quebec play that was adapted into the film Monsieur Lazhar and was nominated for a 2012 Academy Award, will be staged by Theatre Projects Manitoba in March as part of its 23rd season,.

Written by Evelyne de la Chenelière, Bashir Lazhar (March 14-24) explores living with the effects of violence. The title character in the English translation by Morwyn Brebner is an Algerian refugee and eager substitute teacher helping a traumatized middle-school class.

The troupe's season-opener is also from la belle province: Carole Fréchette's comedy John and Beatrice Nov. 1-11), an exploration of the delusions and truths of modern-day romance translated by John Murrell. Beatrice is waiting for Monsieur Right to answer her ad; when John, a bounty hunter, shows up, he is looking to be rewarded. TPM artistic director Ardith Boxall will direct local actors Kevin Klassen and Tracy Penner.

Both productions will be presented at the Rachel Browne Theatre.

TPM will also be introducing a monthly theatre mash-up, featuring performances inspired by the Quebec playwrights. Le Thé¢tre Vice Versa Theatre will present readings of both plays in French and the salons will also feature an eclectic mix of emerging and established Manitoba artists.

"The experience of presenting Quebec theatre in translation brings TPM a new vista; a fresh theatrical landscape for our community to explore," said Boxall in a press release. "With TPM's Theatre Salon, we are proposing an intimate forum for the exchange of ideas, a base camp from which students, artists and audiences will help us explore this defining facet of our Canadian culture and community."
