U of M students winners in national art competition

TWO University of Manitoba students have won awards at the BMO 1st Art! Invitational Student Art Competition, the only national graduating artist competition in the country.

Erika Dueck won the national award for her piece, The Ephemeral Mind, and will receive $10,000. Hillary Smith won the regional award for Manitoba for her work Phrenological Petrifactions and will receive $5,000.

Dueck's piece will become part of the BMO Corporate Art Collection, which includes works by historical and contemporary Canadian masters such as Kenojuak Ashevak, Emily Carr, Paterson Ewen, Marc-Aur®le Fortin, Lawren Harris, Wanda Koop, Micah Lexier, Kent Monkman, Ian Wallace.

Both works will be on display with the rest of the winners from across Canada at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto from Oct. 2-27.
