PAPER CHASE: Dempsey, Millan tales on edge

You may have seen them in park ranger outfits in their personas as "lesbian rangers." Or perhaps they've told your fortune using one of their Winnipeg-themed tarot card decks.
Now Winnipeg performance artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan have turned their quirky sensibility on the legends and archetypal figures of North America in a short-story collection entitled Bedtime Stories for the Edge of the World. It is published by local press Arbeiter Ring.
The artist-authors are launching their book at 7:30 p.m. Monday at McNally Robinson Booksellers. They'll repeat the process on Friday and again on Dec. 7, also at 7:30 p.m., at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

A novelist, playwright and essayist who put Winnipeg's North End on the map of literary Canada will be celebrated Nov. 12 with an evening of reminiscences and readings.
Adele Wiseman is best known for her 1956 Governor General's Award-winning first novel, The Sacrifice, inspired by the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac, and her tragicomic 1974 novel Crackpot.
At the Nov. 12 event former NDP MLA Roland Penner will talk about his friendship with Wiseman, who died in 1992, and U of W English professor Neil Besner will discuss Wiseman's role in Canadian literary history.
The event takes place at the Berney Theatre at 123 Doncaster, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25.

Milk and cookies will replace the usual wine and cheese Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. for the launch of That's What Bears Are For, a new kids' book published by Winnipeg's Peanut Butter Press.
Author Marilyn Helmer of Fergus, Ont., will tell the story of the bear who lived in an attic at the bottom of an old trunk and sign copies of the book, illustrated by Sonea Nadeau. The launch, at McNally Robinson, is described as "pyjamas-optional."
