On The Night Table

Julia Ryckman

Singer, This Hisses

"When I travel, I like to learn about a destination through its literature. This summer I am planning a trip to Iceland -- a journey that is in part about exploring my cultural heritage. To prepare my literary map of Iceland, I have begun reading English translations of the works of Nobel laureate Halldor Laxness. Right now I am part way through World Light, a novel that follows the life of a young poet whose existence is seemingly a grim parade of abuse, poverty, loneliness and illness. However, due to his consuming love of poetry, he is able to transcend this stark reality and still sees life as beautiful and full of meaning. It is an emotionally heavy, but highly inspiring read."

(This Hisses releases sophomore album Anhedonia on Feb. 9 at the West End Cultural Centre.)
