Jon Paul Fiorentino
Author of I'm Not Scared of You or Anything
"I'm rereading David McGimpsey's Li'l Bastard, a collection of 128 'chubby sonnets' (16-line sonnets) that cover such diverse topics as Barnaby Jones, literary snobbery, Ville D'Anjou, and Facebook. It was a finalist for the 2012 Governor General's Award for Poetry; it should have won. It's a hyper-literate, hilarious, and sometimes heartbreaking road trip across our continent, jam-packed with cultural curiosities and clever commentary. My favourite poem of the collection is the achingly gorgeous elegy for his mother, What Was That Poem? McGimpsey is one of the few poets working today whose rhetoric and voice are entirely his own."
