Jann Arden

Calgary-based singer-songwriter and author

"Right now I'm reading the Sarah Waters novel A Little Stranger. She's a U.K. author. I'm only 120 pages in, but so far it's really great. It's set in the 1930s about the people who were maids and butlers of lords and ladies of these estates, and there's a town doctor called back to the estate where his mother used to be a maid. There's some mystery. It's really intriguing. I just finished the Kate Atkinson novel Started Early, Took My Dog. It was nutty. There's a retiring detective, and on her last day there's a drug case. She thinks, 'Why do I want to solve this?' But, see, a five-year-old kid's mom is a crack head trying to sell this kid, so the detective goes and gives her 20 bucks and takes the kid. She's in her mid-50s and never had a kid in her life, so it's funny and sad."
