Free Press nominated for arts council award

THE Winnipeg Free Press is in the running for a 2009 Winnipeg Arts Council Award.

The Winnipeg Folk Festival has nominated the newspaper for the Arts Champion Award, which honours an individual or business patron that has demonstrated sustained support to the arts.

"We're pleased to be nominated," said Free Press publisher Bob Cox. "The vibrant local arts scene is a key part of Winnipeg. We always want to do our part to ensure that our arts groups get the support and exposure they need to be successful. "

A total of 30 artists, arts administrators and patrons have been nominated by their peers in four categories.

The winners will be announced at the Mayor's Luncheon for the Arts, June 11, at the Fairmont Winnipeg Hotel.

Along with the Free Press, the nominees for the Arts Champion Award are José Koes, William and Shirley Loewen and RBC Financial Group.

The nominees for the On the Rise Award, which recognizes an emerging professional artist, are Marie-Josée Dandeneau, Michael Dudeck, Sheena Grobb, Takashi Iwasaki, Freya Olafson and Daniel Roa.

For the Making a Mark Award, which honours an established professional artist, the nominees are Daniel Barrow, Columpa Bobb, Ardith Boxall, Paul Butler, Monique Larouche, Keri Latimer, Brent Lott, John Racaru, John K. Samson, Jennifer Stillwell and Diana Thorneycroft.

Nominated for the Making a Difference Award, which celebrates the contribution of an artist or arts administrator to the growth and development of the arts in Winnipeg, are Patricia Bovey, Nan Colledge, Ray Dirks, Kayla Gordon, Liz Jarvis, Cherry Karpyshin, Rik Leaf, Sheila Spence and Andris Taskans.

The winners will be chosen by a panel of five senior Winnipeg artists whose names are revealed on June 11.

Last year's winners were filmmaker Victoria Prince for the On the Rise Award, rock band leader Vince Fontaine for Making a Mark, theatrical writer and producer Rory Runnells for Making a Difference, and Assiniboine Credit Union for Arts Champion.

A special Arts Champion award was also given to the late Harold Buchwald.
