Filmmaker Maddin creates new work in public at WAG

Winnipeg filmmaker Guy Maddin is taking his creative process public.

Everyone is invited to come and watch the director shooting a portion of his new project Seánces at the Winnipeg Art Gallery Saturday evening, Sept. 29, Sunday afternoon, Sept. 30 and Friday evening, Oct. 5.

Seánces is part of an ongoing project in which Maddin has been engaged for the last three years, including his art installation recreations of lost films Hauntings and Hauntings II, which showcased Maddin’s fanciful recreations of lost films.

During the filming process, visitors will also have a chance to see Maddin’s latest work Only Dream Things, which will be continuously screened on the set constructed for the Seánces shooting. The 19-minute film combines home movies, footage from his lost films shot at the Pompidou Centre in Paris, popular songs and radio broadcasts from the ’60s, as well as family tape recordings.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, Maddin shoots at 10 p.m., 11 p.m., midnight. and 1 a.m. On Sunday, the times are 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 5, he’ll shoot at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8 p.m.
