Reel Pride, ROW première film on persecution over sexual orientation

A film about the harassment and persecution of people around the world because of their sexual orientation is having its Manitoba première Saturday.

The Reel Pride Film Festival and the group Reaching Out Winnipeg present Last Chance, a film that shows how GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered) people are abused in the form of discrimination, violence, imprisonment, torture or even public execution. Reaching Out Winnipeg (ROW) founder Horst Backe said in a press release that in as many as a third of the countries in the world, this abuse is legal or even encouraged by government.

The film tells the story of five GLBT asylum seekers who flee their native countries to escape homophobic violence. After the première, the audience can participate in a question-and-answer panel discussion on GLBT refugees.

Panel members include representatives from three organizations in Winnipeg and San Francisco that work with GLBT refugees, as well as Hamed from Iran who was featured in the Free Press this spring. He is the first GLBT refugee to be resettled in Winnipeg by members of ROW. The film will be screened at 3 p.m Saturday in Winnipeg at the Gas Station Arts Centre, 445 River Ave.
