Winnipeg Film Group gets $125,000 boost

The Winnipeg Film Group got a $125,000 boost from the federal government, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Winnipeg Foundation to upgrade its equipment to allow its members to shoot, edit and screen their films in state of the art high definition, it was announced Wednesday afternoon at the WFG’s Artspace headquarters.

MP Rod Bruinooge (Winnipeg South), a filmmaker himself and a past director of the late, lamented Winnipeg International Film Festival, made the announcement of a $50,000 contribution from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund on behalf of Heritage Minister James Moore.

"The Winnipeg Film Group is a key resource for Winnipeg and Manitoba-based independent filmmakers and video artists because it offers resources and support for training, and creates jobs for residents of Winnipeg," Bruinooge said. "This organization provides a valuable service to our community and makes a vital contribution to the city’s economy and cultural life."

Cecilia Araneda, executive director of the WFG, said the money "will help ensure that Manitobans continue to have access to modern digital tools in the production and presentation of locally created works in film and video.

"This investment will have an important impact on the development of a new generation of Manitoba directors."
