Designing woman

OSCAR-nominated actress Melissa McCarthy has sounded off, more than once, about the troubles large women incur finding fashionable gowns for the red carpet. That, she tells Redbook, is why she started her own label, Pearl, with the help of dressmaker Daniella Pearl.

"Two Oscars ago, I couldn't find anybody to do a dress for me," she told the magazine. "I asked five or six designers -- very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people -- and they all said no."

And it's not just gowns. "Trying to find stuff that's still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible." As she told the Hollywood Reporter back in 2011, what's available is "either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker... nothing in the middle."

Star couple calls it quits

IT'S all over for Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas after 18 years of marriage. She filed the papers, citing the usual opaque "irreconcilable differences."

In a joint statement, the two say "We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost 20 years marriage in a loving and friendly manner," yada yada yada. There's no hint what brought this on, but Melanie has long been known for hyper-vigilance about Antonio and other women.

She's requesting sole physical but joint legal custody of their daughter, Stella. This is her fourth divorce and his second.

Bullock brushes aside rumour

SANDRA Bullock and Captain America star Chris Evans: Is this an actual thing or just another rumour? Several of the gossip mags have been saying these two are dating, but there's been no proof or confirmation.

Entertainment Weekly asked Bullock about it. Here's what they got:

"You guys are a little behind. We've since married, and it started breaking apart so we separated... We're going to remain friends and share responsibility of the farm animals we've taken on, because you just can't abandon the animals."

The consensus is she was kidding, but in Tinseltown, one never knows.

Carey pushing new 'melodic' beverage

MARIAH Carey is marketing a new non-alcoholic beverage called Butterfly. It's pink.

The idea, the L.A. Times suggests, is to help boost her new album, humbly titled Me. I Am Mariah... the Elusive Chanteuse.

The media release says this Butterfly goo is "a melodic beverage inspired by the magic of Mariah Carey." The fine print says the ingredients include water, sugar, sodium benzoate, sucralose and colourings. Yum.

At the news conference, she said the product may make you feel she is "in the room with you." That's because something like a QR code on the bottle takes you to a Mariah Carey website.

Moore's marriage ending

MICHAEL Moore, that self-appointed champion of the 99 per cent, is dumping his wife after 22 years and fighting to hold onto every possible penny of his considerable fortune.

In court papers filed in their property squabble, Moore depicts Kathleen Glynn as a spendthrift who squandered money on their palatial $2-million Michigan lakefront mansion. The Smoking Gun website had the details.

The two own at least nine residential buildings in New York City and elsewhere, worth tens of millions of dollars.

The fight is getting ugly. Moore is demanding, for example, disclosure of a "list, with photographs, of all quilts in your possession." And he wants Glynn to admit hiring a private eye to follow him around.

Actors spotted out and about

JAKE Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams have been seen out and about together, the N.Y. Post reports. They turned up together at some Big Apple boxing match the other night and had dinner in Pittsburgh earlier this month.

But this may be merely professional. They've been in Pittsburgh as co-stars, working on a boxing movie called Southpaw, so this romance stuff may be merely circumstantial.

The picture also stars Lupita Nyong'o and Forest Whitaker.
