Filmmaker Alan King pioneered cinema vérité

TORONTO -- Allan King, the Canadian documentary filmmaker who pioneered "cinema vérité," has died at age 79.

His family announced the death through a news release.

King's documentaries included Warrendale, which took viewers inside an institution for emotionally disturbed children and A Married Couple, which chronicled the breakdown of a marriage.

Born in Vancouver, King began his career at the CBC in the 1950s and then moved on to the BBC. Warrendale, his first major documentary, came out in 1967 to huge acclaim.

Retrospectives of his work have been held in cities around the world, including Toronto, London, Rome, Prague and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

He leaves behind his wife, Colleen Murphy, and four children.

King was president of the Directors Guild of Canada for 10 years and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2006.
