Winnipeg filmmaker Danishka Esterhazy received two awards for her debut feature Black Field at the Vancouver Women in Film Festival on Sunday.
The film was recognized with a Best Feature Drama award and also the Best Performance award for Sara Canning's role as the pioneer woman Maggie McGregor.
Black Field is a dark historical drama set in 19th-century Manitoba about two sisters whose lives are forever changed when a charming and dangerous man arrives at their isolated farm. It was shot over 20 days near Tyndall. Lead actor Sara Canning is currently starring on the hit CW television series The Vampire Diaries.
"Black Field is my first feature film and it was a complete passion project for me," Esterhazy said. "To have it recognized, and to have Sara's performance celebrated, is an absolute thrill."
Black Field can be seen at Winnipeg's Cinematheque theatre on March 12, 16 and 17 nightly at 7 p.m. Esterhazy will introduce the film each night.
