Local documentary to screen at Toronto fest

SPECIAL Ed, a feature documentary about embattled Winnipeg animator Ed Ackerman, will have a berth at Toronto's Hot Docs documentary film festival in April.

The film's director, John Paskievich, conceived the film before Ackerman was arrested in January 2012 while attempting to defend a derelict house the City of Winnipeg had marked for demolition.

Paskievich, whose documentary films include Unspeakable and If Only I Were an Indian, followed Ackerman's dream of an animation project designed to help children read, before he lost his job at the National Film Board.

Ackerman subsequently attempted to raise money for the project independently, remodelling three derelict houses he owned into a film production studio, with devastating results.

The film will screen April 29, April 30 and May 4. Hot Docs runs from April 25 to May 5.
