Movie looking for boy with 'open, honest face'

  • Print

A boy between the ages of five and eight is being sought for a role in the Sony Pictures film Heaven Is for Real as a child who emerges from life-threatening surgery describing visions of heaven.

The film, which will begin shooting in Winnipeg this summer, reportedly stars Greg Kinnear (As Good As It Gets) and Kelly Reilly (Flight) as the boy's parents.

Casting director Jim Heber says a role like this typically requires a search all over North America. The search begins in Winnipeg with an open casting call next Saturday, April 27, in the Millennium Room of the Winnipeg Convention Centre (second floor) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The casting call is for the role of the child exclusively. No experience is necessary.

The boy, named Colton Burpo, is described as "possessed of an open, honest face" according to the casting-call information.

"He's innocent yet perceptive, with a lovely singing voice. Colton nearly loses his life after his appendix ruptures. Although terrified when he's taken in for surgery, he emerges as a calm, comfortable, self-assured little boy who casually offers up his observations of heaven."

According to the Internet Movie Database, Kinnear and Reilly are already cast in the film, which will be directed by Randall Wallace, whose films include We Were Soldiers and Secretariat.

As a writer, Wallace was nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay for the 1995 Mel Gibson film Braveheart.

Local filmmaker Shawn Linden is heading to the Cannes film festival to première his film The Good Lie, which was shot in Montreal and Winnipeg.

Linden says he is not sure he will be making the trip to the French Riviera resort to screen the film, which is part of the Canadian Perspectives program at the festival.

Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) stars as a young man who learns he is the product of a rape. He journeys to confront his biological father, only to learn the man has already been released from prison.

Linden says the film will be released in Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal on May 3.
