IN the Erin Street film production office where people are busy preparing for a second CBC miniseries based on the life of Don Cherry, Premier Greg Selinger grabbed the spotlight Friday morning to announce a $250,000 funding increase to Manitoba's Feature Film Production Fund and Television and Web-based Production Fund.
Selinger used the funding boost to demonstrate his government's continuing support for the film and television industry and cited production activity of $77.3 million in 2009-10 as proof funding and tax incentives help attract production to Winnipeg and Manitoba.
"For those of you in the business, you know how important that is to give you the resources you need to be able to put a package together to finance a film and make it happen here in Manitoba," Selinger said.
Selinger invited Guy Maddin to affirm that Manitoba is a great place to make films, and the Winnipeg filmmaker, sporting a bushy beard, obliged.
"It was great when I started 25 years ago, and through good times and bad, it continues to get better and better each year," said Maddin, fresh from a triumphant screening of his first film Tales from the Gimli Hospital, April 30, in Ottawa at the Prairie Scene Festival. The screening, with live musical accompaniment and narration by Maddin's Keyhole star Udo Kier, drew a standing ovation.
Frantic Films president Jamie Brown was also on hand to applaud the premier's announcement. Frantic is producing the tentatively titled Don Cherry 2 with Toronto's Pier 21 Films, and he confirms Frantic is also prepping the second season of Todd and the Book of Pure Evil in the coming weeks.
Laszlo Barna, executive producer of Keep Your Head up Kid: The Don Cherry Story, says the second chapter of Cherry's saga will cover his years as a broadcaster, after his coaching career comes to an end. Barna says the series will examine how Cherry consistently drew the ire of various CBC bosses, all of whom he outlasted.
Shooting the four-hour miniseries will take place between May 31 and the end of July, Barna says.
