Wayans leaves brothers to do horror parody film

TORONTO -- Comedy star Marlon Wayans is branching out from his show-business family with a new horror parody film that opens today in Toronto.

Instead of collaborating with comical brothers Shawn, Keenen and Damon as usual, he decided to co-write and co-produce A Haunted House with Rick Alvarez.

Wayans, who also stars in the film, says his brothers wanted him to have this solo experience because it was important for him and their business.

And the move has paid off.

The supernatural spoof opened in second place at the U.S. box office two weeks ago, with US$18.8 million.

That's much more than the $2 million it cost to make the project.

A Haunted House is billed as "an outrageous send up of the Paranormal Activity, The Devil Inside and other 'found footage' movies."
