15 city students to sing 'We don't need no education'
FIFTEEN local students will sing about not needing an education at Roger Waters' two Winnipeg concerts this week.
The students from Kildonan-East Collegiate, Valley Gardens Middle School and Bertrun E. Glavin Elementary will join Waters during Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2, singing the "We don't need no education..." chorus, originally performed by school children on the 1979 Pink Floyd album, The Wall, which Waters is performing in its entirety Thursday and Friday at the MTS Centre.
The students were selected by music teachers at the three schools based on their singing, performance and leadership skills, said Wanda McConnell, River East Transcona School Division senior communications co-ordinator. They have practised together three times and watched an instructional video with detailed instructions.
"We haven't had that long to prepare, but I think we've done quite well with the adults teaching us, which is ironic considering the lyrics, 'We don't need no education,'" Duncan Cox, a 15-year-old Grade 10 student at Kildonan-East Collegiate, says with a laugh.
Cox believes he was selected by his band teacher, and local musical director of the project, Janet Isaac-Marten, after she witnessed his version of Cab Calloway's jazz classic, Minnie the Moocher.
"I sang and danced around like a fool, which seems to be my talent: dancing around and making a fool of myself to make people laugh," says Cox, a member of his school's concert band, jazz band and choir.
Cox wasn't overly familiar with Pink Floyd's music before being asked to be in the show, but has been studying up over the past few weeks.
