Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman (Concord Jazz)

Who else but the delightfully quirky singer Kurt Elling could conceive and deliver a tribute to the 1963 recording, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman?

This live disc reprises the six songs of the original disc and adds five, including a "poetic jazz memory" that sets up the circumstances of the original session.

Elling's rendition of the songs is a tasteful tribute, but he takes Hartman's crooning a step or three farther, as he is wont to do with most songs. The singer is backed by his regular trio, led by pianist, arranger and musical director Laurence Hobgood, and augmented by tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts and a string quartet.

Elling uses his rich baritone and intonation to pay tribute to a singer he clearly admires. If you like Elling at all, you'll like Elling's take on Hartman. 'Ö'Ö'Ö1/2
