The Monterey Quartet: Live at the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival (Monterey Jazz Festival Records/Concord)
This collective was put together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Monterey Jazz Festival, and it was a helluva match of musical talents.
Bassist Dave Holland and tenor saxophonist Chris Potter work together regularly in Holland-led bands, so they are clearly comfortable with each other; adding pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and drummer Eric Harland mixed up four A-list players for an eight-tune set of complex, engaging and entertaining music. Each musician brought two pieces to the session.
Cuban emigre Rubalcaba's 50, written for the festival milestone, has a nice funky feel, while Harland's Maiden and Potter's Minotaur are a treat. Holland is, simply, a joy to hear anytime, especially on his own Step To It here. This is great live jazz. 'Ö'Ö'Ö'Ö
