PETER GABRIEL / Scratch My Back (Real World/Universal)

TO mark his musical return after eight years, Peter Gabriel started an artists' exchange series where he records music by some of his favourite artists and they do the same with his material, hence the name Scratch My Back. (The followup will be called I'll Scratch Yours).

The list of artists he covers is a wildly impressive bunch of creative types, ranging from veterans like David Bowie, Lou Reed and Neil Young to newer acts like Elbow, Arcade Fire and Bon Iver. The song selection is a varied mix, but it makes no difference what Gabriel is tackling: each song features his hushed melancholy delivery over sparse orchestration. Throughout the 12-track album he barely breaks a sweat, delivering each song in almost the exact same manner in terms of his voice and phrasing.

For a man known as an inventive musical chameleon, why he sucks the life out of the material is a mystery, but there's no denying he has made each song his own.

With each artist getting a chance to return the "favour," the next collection should be much stronger. 'Ö'Ö
