Edwards, Roderick win Echo Songwriting Award

ONLINE fans have voted and Ottawa roots-rocker Kathleen Edwards and co-writer John Roderick are the winners of the 2012 SOCAN Echo Songwriting award.

The duo receive a $5,000 prize for their song, A Soft Place to Land, beating out four other nominees.

A record 16,804 public votes — a 34 per cent increase over last year — were submitted online for the English and French songwriting prizes, handed out annually to independent Canadian artist. Fans could cast one vote daily between Sept. 10 and Oct. 10.

Winnipegger John K. Samson was among the five English nominees, earning a nod for his song When I Write My Master’s Thesis.

The French winner was Koriass for the song St-Eustache.
