Eight Manitobans have qualified for the national final of the Canadian Music Competition, which takes place next month in Sherbrooke, Que.
Five pianists, Albert Chen, 14, Fanen Chiang, 14, Alexander Hudyma Yu, 9, Garry Hu, 7 and Andrew Zhong, 7; 19-year-old flutist Subin Cho, 12-year-old cellist David Liam Roberts and Charlotte Kandt, an 11-year-old recordist, will compete in the nation’s premiere competition for classical musicians under 30.
Kandt hails from Winkler. The other seven musicians are from Winnipeg.
The eight Manitobans advanced through regional and provincial competitions and achieved a minimum score of 85 per cent to advance to the national final, which will be held from June 21-July 4.
Among those who have performed at the Canadian Music Competition include Brandon violinist James Ehnes and classical guitarist Liona Boyd.
