Folk festival to honour Sarah Harmer at new gala

Musician and activist Sarah Harmer will be honoured at a new Winnipeg Folk Festival fundraiser.
Harmer will receive the 2012 Winnipeg Folk Festival Artistic Achievement Award Nov. 8, at the Folk Festival in the City gala, which replaces the medieval-themed Winter Wassail.
Harmer was born in Burlington, Ont. and started playing guitar at 17. Over the years she has been a member of country group the Saddletramps, rock band Weeping Tile and has released five solo albums. She has won two Juno Awards and played the folk festival in 2001, 2004 and 2010.
In 2005 Harmer co-founded Protecting Escarpment Rural Lend (PERL), an organization dedicated to protecting the Niagara Escarpment from gravel development. She has also dedicated her time to working with the Nobel Women’s Delegation Initiative, which aims to promote the rights and safety of women in Central America.
Harmer will receive the award and perform Nov. 8 at the Fort Garry Hotel. Other entertainment includes local indie-pop group Imaginary Cities. Tickets for the dinner and performances are $150 at the Winnipeg Folk Festival office and at winnipegfolkfestival.ca while performance-only tickets are $75.
Past recipients of the award include Billy Bragg, Richard Thompson, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Leon Redbone.
