DAVE HOLLAND OCTET Pathways (Dare2 Records)
Besides being a great bassist, Dave Holland puts together some of the best bands you're likely to hear in jazz.
Granted, they all have the same core of Holland, Chris Potter (tenor and soprano saxophones) Robin Eubanks (trombone), Steve Nelson (vibes and marimba) and Nate Smith (drums) -- a substantial band in its own right. This time out he adds three more horns to the front line -- Antonio Hart (alto sax), Gary Smulyan (baritone sax) and Alex Sipiagin (trumpet) -- for a big, big sound captured live at New York's famous Birdland.
Holland likes musical textures (he wrote five of the seven tunes on the album) and he gets them from the buoyant title track, through the ballad Blue Jean and all the way to the closer, Shadow Dance, with its Potter/Hart sax exchange. 4 stars
-- Chris Smith
