PEPPE MEROLLA Stick With Me (Independent)

THIS nine-tune recording led by drummer Peppe Merolla is a good time, with six musicians in the kind of ensemble performance that Blue Note featured so successfully in its heyday.

Five of the tunes are by tenor saxophonist John Farnsworth who joins Morello, Steve Turre (trombone and shells), Jim Rotundi (trumpet), Mike LeDonne (piano) and Lee Smith (bass).

The drummer contributes one tune, the opener Naples, which features Turre's ethereal shells, before the band kicks in for some tight group work, the essence of this disc.

Turre's 'bone playing is a highlight, as is Farnsworth's sax, on a straight-ahead, pleasing set. 3 stars
